Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has always conjured images of pirates and ship wrecks and isolated, rugged coastline….and I wasn’t far off! I finally got to see the Skeleton Coast while on my Acacia Africa 19-day Desert Tracker tour of Southern Africa. Yippee!

As part of my Acacia Africa Desert Tracker safari, I got to spend a day volunteering with Lion Encounter/ALERT. It the perfect volunteer activity! I got out in the field, did a useful activity, met like-minded people, and learned something new.

I wasn’t sure where the Okavango Delta was (it’s in Botswana) before my Acacia Africa Desert Tracker safari and now it’s one of my favorite places of all time! It’s the world’s largest inland delta — basically an oasis surrounded by desert! Watch the *Videos*!

I’ve been to Cape Town before – exactly 10 years ago. Now it’s 2011, nearly 20 years since apartheid ended, and I was interested to visit the townships again.

I’ve been enamored with idea of visiting the Kalahari Desert. Even the name “Kalahari”– Land of Thirst — conjures up all that is intriguing about Africa.
So I was thrilled that my Acacia Africa Desert Tracker safari took me to see the Kalahari and meet the San/Bushmen.

Both of my visits to Uganda were to work with nonprofit organizations based in rural communities. Unfortunately, Uganda is struggling with widespread corruption and entrenched poverty. But there’s also a beautiful side!

Hanging with the gorillas in their native habitat is an incredible experience! Seeing them – really seeing their faces – is intense. When they look at you, there is no doubt that we’re related to them.
