Hi Adventure Philanthropists,

Today is International Women's Day – Hooray! As most of you know, I’m a long-time supporter of women’s and children’s rights. And while there’s still plenty of work to do to ensure women’s equality and safety, I want to take this week to *celebrate* recent accomplishments:

During the past decade in Africa alone:

  • Child mortality has been cut by 18%
  • Malaria deaths declined by 30%
  • HIV infections declined by as much as 74%
  • Life expectancy across Africa increased nearly 10%
  • Primary school enrollment increased by 21 million
  • Secondary school enrollment in sub-Saharan Africa grew 48%

And a little closer to home, let’s applaud the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a bill that includes the re-authorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act—the main piece of legislation in the U.S. to address human trafficking.

All good stuff! And the cherry on it all...The proportion of seats held by women in national parliaments around the world is up by 25%. What a way to start the weekend!

And now for our articles this week:

New:  Mummies of the World, Part II

Um, so perhaps I’m a bit obsessed with decayed (yet preserved!) humans…

Follow my fascination with mummies with this inside look at the preserved beings of Pompeii and ever-so-fascinating Egyptian mummies:

Favorite:  Dune Sports! *Video*

I am a die-hard fan of playing in the sand and my recent trip to the famous Namib Desert provided me another opportunity to get a little gritty!

Here’re my favorite dune sports: ATV riding, dune driving, sand boarding, and my latest fav—sand sledding!

Photo of the Week:  Camel Safari, Sahara Desert

While we’re on the topic of amazing deserts, here’s a photo from the camel safari I took in 2010 (which was ranked one of the “Seven Most Bucket List-Worthy Destinations for 2011” by FoxNews. And if you’re really keen to see the desert safari experience, here’s my video from atop a camel...
