Celebrating #GivingTuesday 2013

a_year_of_school 2safe_delivery 2Tuesday, December 3, 2013, is the second annual #GivingTuesday, a new tradition started last year to balance out the extreme shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday with a day of donating to others.

Increased Giving

In its inaugural year more than 2,500 nonprofits, corporations and individuals participated in #GivingTuesday, garnering nearly $10 million in donations on a signal day: Nov 27, 2012. This donation amount is a whopping 53% increase in giving over the previous year.

Building on last year’s success, #GivingTuesday has become a growing movement and this year 7,000 nonprofits, private companies, and community members are expected to come together to make a difference. Even better, the 2013 campaign will be going global with nonprofit organizations in Canada, Australia, and Mexico participating.

My Gift this Year

To celebrate #GivingTuesday this year I’m making several donations to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an organization that was formed at the request of Albert Einstein to respond to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping people to survive and rebuild their lives.

In addition for every $1 the IRC spends, more than 90goes to programs and services that directly benefits refugees and communities affected by war or disaster. Here’s where my gift is going this year:

Girls Education: $56 will fund one girl’s education in Afghanistan. This gift of schooling will help her to build a better life for herself and her family.

Women’s Health: $24 will purchase a safe birthing kit containing hygienic supplies, rubber gloves, a bar of soap, and a warm blanket for the newborn. I am donating 2 kits to women living in Syrian refugee camps.

I think my donation of $104 is a great way to celebrate this new giving tradition: #GivingTuesday! Want to join me in celebrating?! Refer to GreatNonprofits.org to choose the recipient of your donation today!
