Donate My Dollars: May 2011 – Giving U™
Thank you to all the Adventure Philanthropists that voted in our May poll! The children of our Lao village will now get a library too! Go Team!
GoErinGo is adopting a Lao Village!
We made a $350 donation to the Laos Literacy Project on behalf of Big Brother Mouse, a local Lao organization that provides books to children.
Each child in our village will now receive 1 book –probably their very first! The first week of May is the Village Book Party to celebrate the occasion. Yahoo!
But we can also donate a Mini Library for the village! I can’t think what would be more perfect! We just need 50 people to vote “yes” before May 30 and the GoErinGo! Fund will donate an additional $150 to fund the lending library.
Vote “Yes” Now!
Should we donate a library to our Lao village?
- Yes! (100%, 51 Votes)
Total Voters: 51
That’s it! 50 people – like you — vote “yes” and our Laos village receives its first library. It’s that simple (and free, for you).
About Big Brother Mouse
Big Brother Mouse was founded 12 years ago by 4 Lao college students and a retired American book publisher. The mission is to publish and distribute colorful books in Lao to encourage children to learn to read.
The organization’s first book was published in 2006, and now they offer beginner books and story books, Lao folk tales, reference and nonfiction books. While perusing their book shop I saw both The Story of Dr. Doolittle and The Diary of Anne Frank translated into Lao. How cool!
Why publish books in Laos? Books are still rare in Laos. Children learn to read from teachers writing on a blackboard and some have never seen a book. In addition, few Lao people read for pleasure, so Big Brother Mouse is trying to pass along the joy of reading.
Interested in learning more? Visit their web site, www.bigbrothermouse.com, which offers a host of great information, including how to donate in the U.S. (through their U.S. nonprofit the Laos Literacy Project) and how to donate in Australia.
