Tangier, Morocco — December 29, 2009

As told, the city of Tangier was created when Hercules separated Europe and Africa by grasping the Rock of Gibraltar and Mt. Musa (near Tangier) and pulled them apart to create a protected city for his son.  Hercules’ son named the city after his mother: Tingis (later changed to Tangier).

Another interesting fact about the city: Tangier was the first nation to recognize an independent United States and America’s first embassy was established in the city in 1777.
