Rape-resistant Panties? Nooo!
Do not think for a second that this is a good idea. “Rape-resistant” panties is a dangerous idea that perpetuates the stereotypes of why women are raped.
First, it plays into the erroneous idea that woman are raped because they asked for it. The woman was wearing suggestive clothing. She was acting flirtatiously. She shouldn’t have been out at a bar, walking on a dark street, sitting in a parked car, on a date, sleeping in her home, or (fill in the blank).
We women are not raped because of what we wear or what we do. Women are raped because a man commits an act of aggression and violence towards us. Period.
Second, by wearing anti-rape panties, women acknowledge that their sexuality needs to be kept safe, literally under lock and key. It negates the notion that women are powerful, instead feeding into the lie that we women cannot defend ourselves.
But I believe otherwise – that we woman can learn to protect ourselves. This is why I am standing with my friends at IMPACT Bay Area (the chapter where I received my self-defense training) in defiance of these new “anti-rape” panties.
As a form of women’s empowerment, IMAPCT Bay Area has launched its Go Commando! Campaign on IndieGoGo, a fundraising website for new product development. The Go Commando! Campaign is trying to raise $50,000 to teach women and girls how to protect themselves through programs aimed at self-defense training, boundary setting, and increased confidence.

Personal Power is Real Protection
As an alumni of IMPACT self-defense training and long-time supporter, I will be making a $50 contribution to the Go Commando! Campaign – won’t you join me? Our donations will help:
- train more expert instructors
- teach more teen girls, young adult women, and women real, effective self-defense skills using the tools they always have with them: their voices, their elbows, their knees, and powerful kicks
- raise awareness that women CAN physically defend themselves
Remember, rape isn’t a reaction. It’s a deliberate decision to exert force on another person. We can stop rape through education and greater awareness – not by wearing a modern-day chastity belt.
