Volunteer in Mexico! *Video*

I met Luana on my San Blas sail. She was working on the boat as the cook, and a mighty fine cook she is too!

We were chatting one day about how she came to live in Central America, sailing between Colombia and Panama, and she told me that she actually started her around-the-world trip in Mexico, volunteering at a nonprofit organization helping children for 3 months.

Here she describes her volunteering at Misión México:

Misión México

Misión México provides a loving, secure home for children of all ages who have been abused, neglected, orphaned or abandoned. Most come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. Since it was established in 2001, Misión México has helped transform the lives of more than 250 children.

The number of children in their care changes constantly, but on average Misión México cares for between 40-50 children on a permanent basis. The refuge resembles a family home rather than an institution, helping the children feel loved and secure.

All the children attend school, and they are learning to swim and surf. The children also receive regular medical and dental care.
